Mah Jong is a game that originated in China. It is commonly played by four players, but can be played with three, or even two, players. It is said to be similar to the Western card game rummy and is a game of skill, strategy and calculation, but with a degree of chance. U3A Choir is a non-auditioning choir lead by Elizabeth Sandman and Yvonne Yaxley. We are a welcoming and supportive group that includes experienced singers and enthusiastic newcomers to choral music. We cover an interesting range of material and it is not necessary that you read music. 

Everyone is welcome to start the year, but as our program builds progressively through the year later enrolments will be restricted to those with previous choral experience.

We are not a performance oriented choir but a group that just enjoys singing together, however it usually happens that there are a small number of performances each year

Singing has been shown to improve our sense of happiness and wellbeing. Research has found that singing in a choir can improve memory, build confidence, build connections and social bonding and reduce stress.

Time to de-stress and have fun dancing! Circle dance is folk dancing done in a circle formation. It includes traditional and contemporary dances from around the world. No experience is needed. At Conversations Reinvigorated we exchange observations, ideas, conjectures, and arguments, about our interests in current affairs, sciences, arts, histories, cultures, philosophies. The current sources of topics are:

2 Any converser (after consulting the Course Leader) guides a Conversation about an article or essay or video.

3 Topics at the Philosophy Cafe at Launceston, selected by the Course Leader.

4 Someone (after consulting the Course Leader) starts a Conversation with a lecture or story.

When we decide we’d prefer facilitation, then one of us will surely volunteer. Our intermission lasts about twenty minutes, after which we continue conversing – but not necessarily with a conclusion! The magical golden glow of lanterns at night time - either in your garden or in your home, is truly awe inspiring. You will receive a deep sense of achievement with the completion of each lantern project. The lantern making process is quite involved and requires some concentration but it is a truly satisfying experience, fostering creative expression and imagination.

New students will begin with a simple lantern shape and experienced students will have the option of creating lantern forms of their own choice or continue to expand into a diverse range of other creative projects. Please bring secateurs if possible. All materials are provided. There will be a fee of $10 per student, only if you are using my lantern materials.

A discussion group for book reading enthusiasts meeting monthly at Tranquilles to share our reading on a theme or topic one month, and discussing a particular book the next. The books are selected at the beginning of the year from the extensive Library Book Group list. A commitment to attending and contributing is expected. Petanque is an outdoor game played by two opposing teams trying to throw metal boules as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet. The game is normally played on gravel/sand called a piste. Rules are simple and learned within minutes. It provides social stimulation, friendly fun and is an exhilarating challenge. The members of the Port Sorell U3A photography group are interested in developing and sharing their skills as photographers. The group has grown from those who have attended the photography classes presented by Tony Harris since 2014. There are no specific equipment requirements but members of the group will typically have access to a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, a tripod, and a computer with software to post-process their images. The group meets in the Banksia Centre where group members review their photos and share their knowledge on a wide range of photography and post processing topics. Occasionally, we will have guest speakers to talk on a range of photographic topics. Excursions are held every second week, instead of the classroom session. Participants will need to arrange their own transport to the excursion locations, however carpooling is encouraged.

Pickleball is a court based game with similar features of tennis and badminton. It is a fun based game suitable for all ages and can be played indoors or outdoors. It is a fast growing sport that offers opportunity to experience exercise combined with fun. It is currently played at the Banksia Centre on Tuesday mornings and hopefully will be offered on Thursday mornings at the same venue. The game is usually played with 4 players as doubles but for the more enthusiastic players singles can also be played though slightly different rules apply.

Music is known to release positive endorphins to improve mood --- so many good reasons to join up.

We have a full complement of recorders- sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

Our repertoire is mainly early Classical, especially music from the golden age of the recorder, around the !6th and 17th centuries. We also play some Celtic folk music.

The ability to read music is desirable and there is an expectation of some homework practice.

If you haven’t picked up a recorder since school you are still welcome – some tutoring will occur during our sessions for the less experienced. If there is a need we may offer a beginners session.

Walking Netball is a fun way to exercise that is easy on the body. There is no running or jumping but it is lively and adds to your level of fitness. The rules are the same as ordinary netball with some modifications to allow easy movement around the court. It is suitable for both men and women and is a great social activity. This group was formerly known as Crafternoons.  It operates weekly, on Wednesdays at Tranquilles from 11.00 am – 3.00 pm.  Members may opt to stay for the entire duration (i.e. 4 hours) or part thereof, depending on what is convenient for each individual.

Our participants vary in skill-level from beginners to experienced.  No matter what the skill-level, however, all are most welcome.  Our ‘Crafters’ are versatile and perform a wide variety of different crafts, sharing their skills and knowledge, as well as problem-solving and supporting one another in a friendly environment.  We regularly showcase our projects and conduct workshops to demonstrate and learn new crafts.  Additionally, we undertake special excursions to community events, where we share friendship through our appreciation of varying arts and crafts. 

Morning tea and lunch are available for those who wish to purchase  from Tranquilles.
